Frequently Asked Questions
Most of our stories and data products utilize publically available government datasets, such as those offered by the Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics, and Department of Education. However, we sometimes make use of proprietary data that is thoroughly vetted and we always cite our sources.
Our local feeds cover cities, commonly referred to as “places,” as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau, and metropolitan statistical areas outlined by the Office of Management and Budget. In certain cases, we extend coverage to include counties. However, we exercise discretion by omitting locations with incomplete data or excessive sampling error. This is done on a story-by-story basis, typically for locations with relatively small populations.
Our research team releases new stories daily, Monday through Friday.
All of our content and publisher tools are offered free of charge; however, we do ask that you cite the original report. The correct citation link is provided in our RSS feeds and email alerts.
