Our PROMISE

We commit to excellence

Every story starts with a dataset. We rely exclusively on data — usually publicly available government data — to inspire our work. Certain tenants are fundamental to our organization’s success.

Data-Driven Integrity

We are committed to upholding the highest standards of accuracy and objectivity in our reporting. Utilizing the best available datasets and analysis techniques, our goal is to present accurate information without bias. We strive to maintain an impartial viewpoint as we craft our reports and empower our audience to draw their own informed conclusions.

Storytelling Through Insight

We believe in the power of data to foster healthy conversation. However, we don’t just report numbers; we craft analyses that drive understanding and engagement. Our research team specializes in transforming complex datasets into digestible formats.

Unwavering Curiosity

We constantly seek to explore, question, and delve deeper into the data landscape. Our commitment to curiosity fuels our quest for finding new insights that haven’t yet been reported on.

Transparency & Accountability

Transparency is fundamental to our journalistic ethos. We are committed to providing our audience with a clear understanding of our data sources, methodologies, and the processes behind our analyses. By being accountable for our work, we aim to foster trust and credibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do you get your data?

Most of our stories and data products utilize publically available government datasets, such as those offered by the Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics, and Department of Education. However, we sometimes make use of proprietary data that is thoroughly vetted and we always cite our sources.

Is my city included in your local news feed?

Our local feeds cover cities, commonly referred to as “places,” as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau, and metropolitan statistical areas outlined by the Office of Management and Budget. In certain cases, we extend coverage to include counties. However, we exercise discretion by omitting locations with incomplete data or excessive sampling error. This is done on a story-by-story basis, typically for locations with relatively small populations.

How often do you release stories?

Our research team releases new stories daily, Monday through Friday.

Is the content free?

All of our content and publisher tools are offered free of charge; however, we do ask that you cite the original report. The correct citation link is provided in our RSS feeds and email alerts.
